Sennheiser ew D1 Digitial wireless with DPA 4099

January 27, 2017

Trying out the updated Sennheiser ew D1 Digital Wirless system with a DPA 4099G mic. Looking forward to using it for solo guitar gigs with the DPA Mic.

*Update* 2/7/17. I have updated the firmware so the system works with my iPhone using a apple airport (wifi) I have giged 3 times with this set up at a Cafe and Winery with no problems.  I really like the ease of use and tone quality.  While you can’t turn up the system the way you can with a UST pickup you can amplify your guitar to levels that a large audience can hear without feedback.  For me it’s part of a solution.  I do have my guitar plugged into a pickup system if needed but I start off with the DPA only.  I add the pickup as the performance gets going and if more volume is needed.

DPA 4099G w Grace Design AliX

January 24, 2017

Thank you Eben Grace for letting me know you can use the DPA micro dot cable and cut one end and solder a tip sleeve 1/4 jack and plug into AliX with 12v. It’s sounding great and at 10ft away I can have 92bd w no feedback out of a Bose L1 Compact. (cable and a jack pictures Eben Grace)

DPA 4099 G

September 11, 2016

I have liked the DPA 4099 G microphone since it came out a few years ago.  The newer model has the cable (micro-dot) terminate and connect at the end of the goose-neck.  There’s also an additional extension available to further comstomize your mic placement.  I have used it so far with a Digidesign 002 Rack and a Bose ToneMatch mixer with great results on both.  The sound clip is direct to the Digidesign 002 Rack no eq or compression just a bit of hall reverb.  The mic sounds great and I thoroughly enjoyed playing with it through the Bose L1 compact.  DPA 4099 Mic Demo  (Just click and you can hear the mic)

Gig Rig JDZ & Pedal Board

November 9, 2015

Updated “Gig Rig” all starts with a custom hand made Flamenco Cedar Blanca made by Jorge de Zofia of Palm Beach FL. I use D’Addarío EJ45 or EJ45C and EJ25C.  It’s outfitted with a L.R. Baggs Dual Souce Pickup System (Element & Mic) to a Line 6 Relay 30.  Then it’s all Eq’ed in the Grace Designs FELIX preamp.  (At times I also use the DPA 4099 G mic) on all my guitars. In the effects loop I have a Strymon Big Sky, to a DigiTech Jam Man Solo XT with a FS3X foot switch, to a BBE Sonic Stomp back to Felix. The pedals are mounted to the Pedaltrain Fly board.  I use the Bose L1 Compact or QSC TouchMix 8 and QSC K10’s.

Grace Designs Felix “Tames RMC Gold & Poly-Drive II”

July 12, 2015

I think I’ve rekindled my affection towards my DeVoe Blanca with RMC-Pickups & Poly-Drive II, DPA-4099G, and Grace Designs Felix PreAmp. The Grace Designs Felix Preamp was able to tame some of the piezo quack that drove me nuts and with the DPA blended in I can get very natural tone and loud without feedback.

Sennheiser ewD1 (Love It) with DPA 4099G  See Update Below

March 29, 2015

I wanted to try going digital with the DPA 4099G mic,  I was using the Shure ULXS4 and ULX1, wich sounded good but if you taped the antenna it made werid nose as well as a few other sounds.  The Sennheiser is quiet and easy to use.  The best part was I took the reciver and body pack out of the case and hooked it up to my Bose ToneMatch (Nylon String w/Condensor preset), hooked up the DPA 4099G with the mico dot DAD6034 adapter, and turned it on and ***Presto*** it was all on set up and worked perfect.  I did not need to adjust a thing and had beautiful rich thick warm tone with no sound degradation or tone loss.  Beautifully done Sennhieser.  Best system I’ve used to date. For my main purpose it to play Flamenco/Spanish style nylon string guitar with out a pickup and have an easy set up (less than 5 min).  I will use the DPA 4099G mic primarily on my Lester Devoe Negra or Zofia Blanca.  Two great Flameco guitars.  I wanted to have the freedom to move around on stage or in venues and sit in different spots and not be tied to one location to perform.  This makes that possible and the sound is really excellent as well as ease of use.   If you need a  Wirless system solution for guitar the DPA 4099 and Sennheiser EW D1 is worth checking out.  I do about 100 shows a year.  I will be giging with it later today for the first time so I will post more later.

5/29/15 – Update Upon a few times playing live the system would drop out and make strange noisiest so I sent the system back and decided to use the DPA with a hard wire connection.

DPA 4099G Still Mic For Me Live

February 19, 2015

For me my microphone of choice when playing live is the DPA 4099G when I play my Lester Devoe Flamenco Negra. I have used it with the Bose L1 S system with great results only needing to cut a few decibels on the bass (4-6db) for live playability without feedback.

Shure ULX and ULXS4 with DPA 4099

April 30, 2014

Shure ULX and ULXS with DPA 4099-G and micro dot adapter. I personally am so tired of how pickups sound, I understand why we need them, however given the chance I will always go for a mic to capture what I am trying to do when playing a quality flamenco guitar. I have come to like what the DPA 4099 can do when positioned just right you can capture a very nice tone with out too much proximity effect or low bass/ boom frequency. I also like adding the Schertler DYN-G attached to the bridge on treble string side.

Shure ULXS4

I’ve been using the DP4099-G and Schertler DYN-G on my guitars with my Bose L1S system. I’ve had the DPA4099-G on a wirless system but there is a bit of static/ white noise with the system. So I pulled the trigger and purchased a Shure ULXS4 system. I have heard it used when I saw Marijia Temo use it with her guitar and it sounded great and when I was able to ask her she told me about the Shure ULXS4. It should be hear by Wed this week and I hope to try it out this Thursday at a small reception 150+ in attendance.

I’ve really been enjoying the ease and tone as well as the complements from patrons/ fans who have been giving me positive feedback and re bookings. For me I do like the sound of the QSC series but last year with over 100 shows I was getting sore and tired from the set up and tear down as well as playing 3 to 5 hours. Not to mention the set up time. Last year I met a famous Guitar Player at Guitar Center and we talked for about two hours and he introduced me to the Bose L1 system. He encouraged me to try it and having use the Bose years ago I was hesitant but it did decide I would try it. It’s really imperative that you also get the tone match. Now set up as about 2 to 3 minutes I press one of my pre programed presets and turn everything on plugging in and I’m ready to go with live sound sounding excellent in less than five minutes. When I’m playing straight Flamenco Guitar I use a DPA Microphone 4099G wirelessly and a Schechter DYN-G transducer microphone. They go in channel 2 and three. Channel 1 is MP3 playback, backing tracks iPad running One Track app. Channel 4 is a wireless speech vocal microphone. I have a seven presets for various size rooms and various inputs and outputs. I use very little reverb and some of the parametric graphic equalizer and some mid cut on the Guitars. The Bose L1 gets transported in SKB hardshell case is on wheels and then the other gear is packed in a rack roller or small bag and I have 2 to 3 various bags with extra cables extensions and such. Below is the most current picture of what everything looks like when it’s packed. And a picture of my current live set up.
