2017 Andy Culpepper 1951 Marcelo Barbero ex Sabicas build 5 Fan Brace kind of 7.

May 30, 2017

Some folks have asked about my recent  AC Blanca/Spruce build.  It’s similar in build and design to a 1951 Marcelo Barbero ex Sabicas guitar.  It’s a five fan brace with two smaller outer braces.  See below

The neck is 2mm wider at the nut thand the standard 52mm this build is at 54mm and a 658mm scale lenght.  I wanted to try tuners instead of flamenco pegs.

For guitar strings I have tried various sets from Daddario, LaBella, Guitar Solo, Luthier, Hanabach, Salverez and I’ve come to prefer Daddario EJ45.

I also asked Andy to make a sound port on the guitar so I can hear a bit more when playing without monitors or amplification.

I also am using a Daddario small NS micro Tuner

For a pickup amplification system I chose the L.R. Baggs Dual Source (Element & Mic)

When I’m playing out I use the Grace Design AliX to a Bose L1 system.

Jorge de Zofia A1F Cedar Blanca cracks again

January 9, 2017

I have two guitars that have been made by Jorge.  I prefer my Blanca (Cedar Top- Spanish Cyprus Back & Sides) for tone and feel over the Negra (Redwood Top-Madagascar Back & Sides) . But before I even was able to play it it was cracked on the back.  The first time the crack may have happened in shipping, maybe due to the battery not being taken out or shipping/handling.  The guitar was in a BAM Guitar Case.  The guitar is only two and a hafe years old.  Recently this summer the fretboard started to crack near the sound hole between the A and D string.  Below is the crack.

The guitar has lived in great humidity 55-65% and generally 72 degrees in a  BAM case.  I do have a LR Baggs Dual Source Pickup system in the guitar.  I was able to do the repair myself after talking to a few luthiers.  I did ask Jorge for input but never heard from him.  I used glue from Stewart Mac Donald and ebony shavings to fix the crack.

Phil Jones AC 150 Cub w LR Baggs Dual Source

October 18, 2016

To hear the LR Baggs Pickup on a Jorge de Zofia Flamenco Blanca click JDZ & LR Baggs Dual Source.  What was used was a Jorge de Zofia Ceader Blanca guitar with a LR Baggs Dual Source Pickup system (Element & Mic) to a Grace Design AliX Preamp then a Strymon blueSky Reverb and Digitech JamMan Solo XT loop pedal in the effects loop.  XLR out from AliX to a Phil Jones AC 150 Air Pulse acoustic amp.

More mic please (in LR Baggs Dual Source)

July 3, 2016

If you have the LR Baggs Dual Source and your pickup UST is hotter than the mic try bringing the gain down. I moved the pickup gain switch to (low gain) and now I have a stronger mic signal in my mono out. The Grace Design AliX tames the low so no feedback and just a bit of boost on treble and my guitar the JDZ Negra sounds like the guitar just louder with no piezo pickup tone.

New Grace Design AliX pedalboard setup

July 1, 2016

New Pedalboard Layout. One of the best things about Grace Designs AliX is that there’s enough power to power all these pedals and wirless receiver. No messy power supply or extra cables. I run this direct into my mixer, Bose L1 Compact or Bose L1II wB2 sub & ToneMatch mixer, or a powered speaker like QSC K8. Thanks Eben Grace and Team at Grace AliX ROCKS! The board is: Grace AliX, input from Line 6 Relay G30- AliX, from efx loop (TC Electronic HOF Mini-DigiTech JamMan Solo XT w FS3X Switch) back to AliX and out via DI in AliX. All pedals are powered from AliX. The pedal board is the Pedaltrain Metro 20.

L.R. Baggs Dual Source Pickup System

May 10, 2016

I just installed a LR Baggs Dual Source (Element & Mic) on JDZ Negra its fantastic string balance e-E and warm tone, mic can be blended in at 100% with no feedback. This is the best dual source I’ve come across so far. No cutting sides, adjustable low cut on mic from 100-2K, Phase Switch, Pickup Gain Selector, and so easy to switch between mono and stereo out. I have thus system installed in two of my guitars. With the Bose L1 systems and Bose ToneMatch Mixer (L.R Baggs Element Preset) I have a great gig rig.

Roland AC 33 for on the Go

December 23, 2015

For a small battery powered option the Roland AC 33 can’t be beat. It’s a fantastic little lamp that has options and effects like reverb and chorus two channels one for a guitar pick up and one XLR mic input no phantom power.  There is also a 1/8 Stereo line in to power a iPod or MP3 player. To power the amp you have two options plug it in  or the option to power the amplifier with a battery pack using eight AA batteries.  There are a few aftermarket cases available to transport the amp and protect it.  I purchased a Arriba AC 130 Soft Case, for the Roland AC 33 on eBay.  I will be primarily using the amp with my Jorge De Zofia equipped with a LR Baggs Dual Source System (Element and Mic) blended.

Update 1/7/16
I’ve used the AC for 3 small gigs and it workes wonderfully.  The tone from the amp complements acoustic instruments especially my guitars with pickup systems such as the LR Baggs Dual Source and Fishman Presus Blend.  I’ve added 2 Boss FS-5U to control the built in looper and it has performed flawlessly.  Very satisfied with the amp.  It’s really a great travel and go compact gig rig.

The case is below.

Gig Rig JDZ & Pedal Board

November 9, 2015

Updated “Gig Rig” all starts with a custom hand made Flamenco Cedar Blanca made by Jorge de Zofia of Palm Beach FL. I use D’Addarío EJ45 or EJ45C and EJ25C.  It’s outfitted with a L.R. Baggs Dual Souce Pickup System (Element & Mic) to a Line 6 Relay 30.  Then it’s all Eq’ed in the Grace Designs FELIX preamp.  (At times I also use the DPA 4099 G mic) on all my guitars. In the effects loop I have a Strymon Big Sky, to a DigiTech Jam Man Solo XT with a FS3X foot switch, to a BBE Sonic Stomp back to Felix. The pedals are mounted to the Pedaltrain Fly board.  I use the Bose L1 Compact or QSC TouchMix 8 and QSC K10’s.

LR Baggs Element

September 4, 2015

What LR Baggs says about their “Element Pickup” “Unlike typical undersaddle acoustic guitar pickups that are dependent on string compression for their sound, the Element was engineered to mirror the soundboard’s actual movement as you play. At the heart of the pickup, a flexible film sensor only 2 thousandths of an inch thick picks up the guitar’s most delicate nuances. Tracking the motion of the top rather than a direct string attack suppresses “quack” caused by compression and unlocks the Element’s unrivaled dynamic range. The pickup’s minimalist construction lessens any influence on the acoustic properties and creates an intimate coupling between the pickup and guitar for the highest fidelity possible.” Lr Baggs web page: http://www.lrbaggs.com/pickups/element-acoustic-guitar-pickup

Line 6 Relay G30

August 13, 2015

I have been using my Line 6 Relay 30 for over a year.  I purchased it at Sweetwater to use with my Flamenco Guitars.  At this time I’m using it with my JDZ guitar outfitted with the LR Baggs Dual Source and Córdoba F7 Paco with a Fishnan Presus Blend.  Both are a two source a UST and Mic that are blended.  With the Line 6 I can be free of the wires and walk around.  I get a great sound and pick up the percussive techniques in the Flamenco style especially the glopes.   I use the G30 with a Grace Felix Preamp or direct to a QSC Touch Mix 8.  It’s a great inexpensive system. 😎
